Kochi: As planned, the BJP-led government announced implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) on Monday, media reports.
CAA was passed by Parliament in December 2019 kicking off a series of protests and violence claiming over 100 lives.
The protests abated after the spread of Covid 19. The act enables the government to grant Indian nationality to non-Muslim migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan coming to India before 2015.
The Home Minister Amit Shah had a few days back announced the government’s decision to implement the act.The government has said the Citizenship Amendment Act will help minorities from Muslim-dominated countries get citizenship if they fled due to religious persecution. The opposition parties claimed that the act will discriminate against Muslims and thereby violate the Constitution.
