Kochi: Collapse of a portion of NH 66 and surfacing of cracks at different stretches across Kerala has opened a debate over the quality of construction of the much touted National Highways in the state, media reports said.
The collapse of a section of NH 66 at Kooriyad in Malappuram has brought to light a series of cases in Thrissur, Malappuram, and Kannur districts where fissures have appeared. Earth slip occurred in an area at Kuppam in Kannur.
A crack was reported on a section of National Highway 66 that passes through Manathala village in Thrissur district, which is under construction.
The collapse first occurred on Monday afternoon, damaging several vehicles and disrupting traffic between Thrissur and Kozhikode.
One side of the elevated highway caved in and fell onto the service road below. Amid rising concerns, a two-member team from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) inspected the site.
Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has assured a full investigation into the recent collapse of a section of NH66 at Kooriyad in Malappuram.
