SC hears Nimisha Priya case

Kochi: The Union Government on Friday pleaded to the Supreme Court to permit only the relatives of Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya to negotiate with the victim’s kin for clemency of Nimisha who is on a death row.
The Attorney General R Venkataramani
argued that involvement of others in the negotiations will not be fruitful.
Appearing on behalf of “Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council”,
Advocate Ragenth Basant, sought nod from the Apex Court to send a delegation to negotiate with the victim’s family for her clemency.

The Council has filed a plea seeking its intervention to save the life of the Kerala nurse.
Basant thanked the Government and others involved for their efforts to defer the death sentence of Nimisha Priya.
Basant said the negotiations should revolve on the issue of the victim’s family granting her clemency. The issue of Blood money is secondary.
Sunni cleric Kanthapuram A P Aboobacker Musaliyar from India had intervened to get the execution of Nimisha postponed.
Basant requested that a delegation of two or three people having influence in Yemen should go to Yemen for negotiations.

However, Venkataramani was not in its favour saying that “I don’t think anything formally can happen at this point.”
As the bench queried what can be done, Venkataramani said, “It’s a very difficult situation?
