Kochi: In a move to act against cops who bashed a Congress leader in custody in 2023, Kerala DGP has sought legal advice to proceed against them, Asianet News reported.
The DGP has sought legal possibility of IG reviewing DIG’s previous report that gave minor punishments to three of five erring police men including the Sub inspector of Kunnamkulam police station.
The legal opinion became essential as the matter is sub judice.
Youth Congress leader V S Sujith was taken to Kunnamkulam police station where he was mercilessly assaulted by five cops. Sujith was punished for intervening in an incident where the police were questioning his friends on April 5, 2023.
The police also tried to file a fictitious case of intoxication against Sujith while a medical examination gave him a clean chit.
Meanwhile, the Congress has decided to continue its protest against the police. The Human Rights Commission has registered a suo mottu case.
The police atrocity against Sujith came to light when the court directed to release the video footage of police bashing Sujith mercilessly after a two year long legal fight.
