Kochi: In a major announcement, the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday said it is going to embark on the second phase of the controversial Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in 12 states and Union Territories.
Addressing a press conference on Monday, the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar said the EC had successfully completed the exercise of purifying the electoral rolls in Bihar.
The CEC announced that the second phase of the SIR will be carried out in “12 States and Union Territories.”
The ECI had in June 2025 announced the nationwide SIR alongside the SIR for Bihar.
The first phase is scheduled to begin on November 1.
It will cover over 10 states and one Union Territory, including the election-bound states of Assam, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, and West Bengal.
