Kochi: Kerala government on Friday formally placed M R Ajith Kumar, Former DGP, Law and Order in connection with allegedly sabotaging probe into attack on Youth Congress protesters at Alappuzha in December 2023.
The government placed him under suspension as his continuance in service could affect the fairness of the inquiry.
The Special Investigation Team had found Ajith Kumar allegedly interfering in the probe into the assault of Youth Congress workers in Alappuzha, The Hindu reported.
The then Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s security guards assaulted the protestors during the Nava Kerala Sadas outreach programme on December 15, 2023.
Ajith Kumar is accused of influencing the probe into the assault of Youth Congress workers.
Five policemen have been suspended for assaulting Youth Congress protesters by
the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by
the newly elected United Democratic Front (UDF) government to conduct further investigation into the case.
According to the suspension order, State Police Chief (SPC) Ravada A. Chandrasekhar reported that the SIT found that the course of the original investigation had been altered due to “undue influence” from the office of Ajith Kumar.
The order notes that the statements recorded by the SIT from former investigating officers, Inspector K P Tomson and Deputy Superintendents of Police Arun K S and Sunil Raj, consistently alleged that they were subjected to pressure during the investigation.
