Church decries CPM criticism

Kochi: The Syro Malabar Catholic Church has condemned the criticisms made by CPM against Thalasserry Archbishop Mar Joseph Pamplany and sought an end to the campaign, media reports said.
The Syro-Malabar Church described the attacks, particularly those coming from leaders of the CPM, including the party’s state secretary MV Govindan, as irresponsible, misleading and discomforting.
The controversy stems from Archbishop Pamplany’s recent remarks thanking the Union Home Minister and the Prime Minister for their role in securing the release of Catholic arrested nuns in Chhattisgarh.
Pamplany’s demand to political parties to work towards increasing rubber price to Rs 300 mark led to political controversy due to misinterpretation.
The church said that it had no special association with any political party.
The Church will not hesitate to acknowledge good things done by any government and point out errors without any discrimination.
No political party can decide on who the Church should thank and whom to criticise, it said.
CPM state secretary M V Govindan describing Pamplany an opportunist and DYFI leader V K Sanoj equating him with German pastor Martin Niemöller led to strong criticism.
