Kochi: A Station House Officer (SHO) has evaded prosecution even after allegedly raping a woman about a decade back in Kerala.
Though the accused DySP A Umesh has been suspended following media fury, no FIR has been filed against him, media reports said.
The accused Umesh is currently serving at Vatakara, Kozhikode Rural, after grave allegations surfaced.
The action against Umesh was taken on the basis of a special report submitted to the State Police Chief.
The report said Umesh’s alleged immoral, illegal, and indisciplined activities have tarnished the image of the police force.
The SHO Binu Thomas, who accused Umesh of raping the woman, was found dead in the Cherpulassery police quarters on 15 November. A suicide note left behind by the deceased SHO said a woman along with four men were taken into custody for alleged immoral activities at Vadakkenchery Police Station and was released without a case being registered by Umesh who was then Circle Inspector.
Umesh misused his position to sexually exploit the woman, and collect bribes from those arrested with her.
The woman has given a statement against Umesh.
The State Police Chief has been directed to propose a panel of officers to conduct the enquiry.
Meanwhile, Umesh hĂ s gone on medical leave citing an ECG abnormality shortly before the suspension order was issued.
