Filthy canals threat to public health

Filthy canals threat to public health
Kochi: The Queen of Arabian sea is stinking but the government is more worried on implementing the unfathomable K-rail project at all costs.

The Edappally canal, sandwiched between the Metro station and Lulu Mall, gives an insight into the state of affairs of the governance of the commercial capital of the state.

It is more shocking to find the influencial Lulu group turning a blind eye to it and not taking up the matter with the authorities concerned.

The canal is said to contain all harmful bacteria including the e-coli that can permeate through into drinking water bodies and contaminate it all along its course.

It is scary to learn that the count of Coliform in
Edappally and Chilavanoor canals are many times more than the permissible limit, media reports quoting pollution control board.
There is little dissolved oxygen in the canals needed for fishes and other marine lives to survive.

Fecal contamination in the Perandoor canal is 320 times than the permissible limit and it is 230 more in Edappally canal.

High presence of high toxins in the canals make them more dangerous.
