Excise frees CPM MLA’s son in ganja case

Kochi: CPM MLA U Prathibha’s son Kaniv was among the seven accused whose names were dropped from the chargesheet in a narcotics related case filed by the police on Thursday, media reports said.
The charge sheet filed in a court in Alappuzha district now contains names of only two accused in the case.
The Excise team arrested nine accused including the MLA’s son Kaniv, from Alappuzha Thakazhi, while the gang were allegedly using ganja on December 28, 2024.
A case was registered for the use of banned substances in public places. Kaniv was the ninth accused in the FIR filed initially. Later, the Excise filed an interim report dropping the names of seven accused for want of evidence.
Later, the accused were then released on bail. Prathibha accused the media for the matter and lodged a complaint against the excise officials to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
A probe conducted by the Alappuzha Excise Assistant Commissioner S Ashok Kumar found the officials committing lapse during the investigation, the reports said.
