Govindachamy held

Kochi: Rape and murder convict, Govindachamy nabbed hours after he jumped the high security Kannur Central Jail from his hideout in Kannur on Friday, media reports said.
He was convicted for raping and murdering 23-year-old Sowmya in a moving train between Thrissur and Shornur in Kerala in 2011.
He was perched on stairs of a well behind the National Sample Survey Sub-regional Office in Kannur.
A staff of the National Sample Survey Office traced Govindachamy hiding inside the well balancing on a rope tied to a pipe.
A lookout notice was issued after he escaped at about 1.15 am. The incident has raised serious concerns over surveillance lapses at one of Kerala’s most secure prisons.
A native of Karur in Tamil Nadu, Govindachamy alias Charley Thomas was serving life sentence in the rape and murder case.
He was initially sentenced to death, Govindachamy’s punishment was later commuted by the Supreme Court. Despite having only one arm, he managed to escape from the high-security facility under unclear circumstances.
