HC absolves blast convicts

Kochi: The Bombay High Court on Monday set free 12 persons who were convicted in the 2006 Mumbai train blasts case that killed 180 people and injured many, media reports said.
Absolving them in the July 11, 2006,
case, a division bench of the court observed that the prosecution had “utterly failed” to prove the case against them.
Five of them were given capital punishment while the remaining were sentenced to life imprisonment.
A series of seven bomb blasts on 11 July took place over a period of 11 minutes on the Suburban Railway in Mumbai killed 209 people and injured over 700 more.
The bombs were set off in pressure cookers on trains plying on the Western Line Suburban Section of the Mumbai Division of Western Railway. They exploded at Matunga Road, Mahim Junction, Bandra, Khar Road, Jogeshwari, Bhayandar and Borivali suburban stations. Some 350 people were detained 36 hours after the incident.
In an email sent to a TV channel, an Islamic terror outfit linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba had owned up responsibility for the bombings
