Kochi: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday dismissed bail pleas of those booked under UAPA for allegedly conspiring in the February 2020 riots, the Hindu reported.
The verdicts on bail petitions of Tasleem Ahmed, Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, Athar Khan, Abdul Khalid Saifi, Gulfisha Fatima, Meeran Haider, Shifa Ur Rehman, Mohd Saleem Khan and Shadab Ahmed were delivered by different benches.
Arguing on behalf of the Delhi police against the bail petitions of the accused, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta had told the Delhi High Court that those accused of acting against the nation must remain in jail until the final verdicts were delivered.
The prosecution argued that it was not a case of spontaneous riots but a case where riots were planned well in advance with a sinister motive and well-thought-out conspiracy, the reports said. The 2020 Delhi riots were multiple waves of bloodshed, property destruction, and rioting in North East Delhi, beginning on 23 February 2020
Protests began across the country in December 2019 against the passage of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), for the benefit of Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, Zoroastrians, Jain and Buddhists coming from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
