Judge claims plot to trap him

Kochi: Delhi High Court Judge Yashwant Varma said he had no idea of the cash seized from his residence while replying to High Court Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya who was asked by the Supreme Court of India to probe into the matter, media reports said.
Justice Yashwant Varma claimed that the store room where the money was said to be hoarded was not part of his official residence, the reports said.
Stating that neither he nor his family had any knowledge of the money, the judge said there was a conspiracy to frame and malign him.
He claimed that no cash was ever placed in that storeroom either by him or his family members while denouncing the suggestion that the cash belonged to him.
The in-house probe was constituted by the Chief Justice of India after wads of cash were detected by the fire force personnel while dousing a fire in Justice Varma’s residence.
According to the report submitted by High Court Chief Justice Upadhaya, the incident happened on March 14 and was informed by the Commissioner of Police Delhi on March 15 evening.
The Supreme Court said the Delhi High Court Chief Justice “for the time being has been asked not to assign any judicial work” to Justice Varma, the report said.
“The Chief Justice of India has constituted a three member Committee for conducting an inquiry into the allegations against Justice Varma based on the report submitted by Delhi High Court Chief Justice.
The Delhi Police is probing the call details of the judge and others associated with him.
