Kochi: Eight RSS workers were sentenced to life imprisonment by a Thrissur court for murdering a DYFI activist Biju, 31, on May 16, 2010, at Kumbalangad, Wadakkanchery, in Thriisur in Kerala, media reports said.
Delivering the verdict, the Thrissur Additional District and Sessions Judge III slapped a penalty of Rs 1,44,000 on each of the convicts.
The court had found the accused guilty the of the crime the other day.
Those convicted are Mooraayil Jayesh, 43, Iravukulangara Sumesh, 42, Kuttikkadan Sebastian, 46, Thaikkadan Johnson, 51, Kizhakkottill Biju alias Kuchelan Biju, 46, Karimpanavalappil Satheesh alias Sajeesh, 39, Karimpanavalappil Saneesh, 37, Karimpanavalappil Suneesh, 34. Another accused Ravi passed away during the course of the trial.
Biju and his friend Jineesh, 24, of CITU were hacked. Biju succumbed, while Jineesh survived. Jineesh was the prime eyewitness.
The prosecution argued that political rivalry was the motive behind the murder. The investigation was led by T S Sineesh, who was circle inspector of Wadakkanchery.
The prosecution presented 24 witnesses, 82 documentary evidences, and 23 material exhibits, including the weapons used in the attack. The legal team for the prosecution included special public prosecutor K D Babu, Sharath Babu Kottakkal, and Reshma P V.
