NATO allies defy US on Greenland takeover

Kochi: US President Donald Trump’s move to impose new taxes on eight US allies for Opposing US’ plan to takeover the autonomous Danish territory has intensified unity among those opposing US proposals, BBC reported.
Trump warned tariffs on Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the UK in February if they opposed his takeover of the autonomous Danish territory.
The countries have issued a joint statement, saying Trump’s plan risks a “dangerous downward spiral”.
Tariff threats undermine transatlantic relations,” they said, reiterating that they “stand in full solidarity with the Kingdom of Denmark and the people of Greenland”.
The countries said they are “committed to strengthening Arctic security as a shared transatlantic interest” as members of the NATO military alliance.
They said they were ready to engage in a dialogue based on the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
