Kochi: Unsubstantiated reports of move to execute Indian nurse, Nimisha Priya, of Kerala on July 16 for murdering a Yemeni national are making rounds, media reports said.
Nimisha Priya, who had gone to Yemen in search of a job in 2008, got embroiled in the murder of her Yemeni business partner Talal Abdo Mahdi in 2014.
She was arrested and convicted for murder in 2018. The country’s Supreme Judicial Council upheld the verdict in November 2023.
A forum comprising politicians, activists, businessmen, and expatriates worked hard to rescue Nimisha by paying blood money.
While everything worked well for her, the remuneration sought by the lawyer seeking her amnesty, became a stumbling block.
Subhash Chandran K R, member of the council and Supreme Court lawyer, said there was no official confirmation on her case. The council has also not received any reports of confirmation by the Ministry of External Affairs.
Efforts to contact Samuel Jerome Bhaskaran, who was working for her release, failed. Priya’s husband Tomy Thomas was also in the dark on the issue.
