No bail to Umar, Sharjil

Kochi: The Supreme Court today rejected bail to former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student leader, Umar Khalid, and software engineer and activist Sharjeel Imam involved in February 2020 riots in the national capital.
The Supreme Court upheld prosecution’s
claim opposing the bail to the accused.
However, the Apex Court granted bail to Gulfisha Fatima, Meeran Haider, Shifa Ur Rehman, Mohd Saleem Khan, and Shadab Ahmed.
They had moved the Apex court seeking bail mainly on the ground of prolonged incarceration without trial for the past five years.
Khalid, Imam and the others were accused of being the “masterminds” behind the riots which killed 53 people and over 700 injured. Violence erupted during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act and the National Register of Citizens.
The accused were booked under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act case related to the alleged “larger conspiracy” behind the February 2020 riots in the national capital.
