Kochi: The Supreme Court of India has released the asset declarations of Chief Justice and other judges in the official website, media reports said.
Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna, retiring on May 13, has fixed deposits and bank accounts worth Rs 55.75 lakh. Justice Khanna has invested Rs 1.06 crore in the Public Provident Fund (PPF). Justice Khanna owns a two-bedroom DDA flat in South Delhi and a four-bedroom flat in the Commonwealth Games Village jointly with her daughter who owns 44 per cent stake in it.
Justice B R Gavai, who will take over as Chief Jistice of India on May 14, has a share in an ancestral house of pre independence time in Himachal Pradesh. Justice Gavai has Rs 19.63 lakh in bank accounts and Rs 6.59 lakh in his PPF account.
He has an inherited house in Amravati, Maharashtra, residential apartments in Mumbai and Delhi, and agricultural land in Amravati and Nagpur. Justice Gavai has also declared liabilities amounting to Rs 1.3 crore. Twentyone out of the 33 judges whose assets were disclosed.
Justice A S Oka, has a total of Rs 92.35 lakh in PPF, Rs 21.76 lakh in fixed deposits, and owns a 2022 Maruti Baleno car. He also has a car loan of Rs 5.1 lakh.
Justice Vikram Nath has declared a 2-BHK apartment in Noida, a bungalow in Allahabad, and agricultural land in Uttar Pradesh. His investments total Rs 1.5 crore.
Justice Surya Kant’s declared assets include residential properties in Chandigarh, Gurugram, and Delhi, which are co-owned with his spouse. His investments include 31 fixed deposit receipts worth a total of Rs 6.03 crore.
Justice Bela M Trivedi has a house in Ahmedabad, along with one under construction in a cooperative society. Her assets also include Rs 60 lakh in mutual funds, Rs 20 lakh in PPF, jewellery worth Rs 50 lakh, and a 2015 Maruti Swift car.
Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia’s asset list notes that all his immovable properties were acquired before he became a judge. He also owns a 2008 Maruti Zen Estilo car, which is not in use. Justice Sanjay Kumar has a diversified stock portfolio, including shares in companies such as Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd, Bharti Airtel Ltd, HCL Technologies Ltd, Infosys Ltd, and Tata Steel, among others.
Justice K V Viswanathan, who was elevated to the Supreme Court in May 2023 after a successful legal career, has assets totaling Rs 120.96 crore. He paid income tax of Rs 91.47 crore from 2010-11 to 2024-25.
The disclosure of assets is part of the ongoing effort to ensure greater transparency and accountability within the judiciary.
