Star Link to offer satellite internet

Kochi: In a bid to give a major thrust to the digital connectivity programme, India has allowed Elon Musk’s Star Link to provide satellite internet and other services in the country, media reports said.
The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) has given permission to M/s Starlink Satellite Communications Pvt Ltd (SSCPL) to offer satellite communication services.
SSCPL will use the Starlink Gen1 low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation for five years or until the end of the operational life of the Gen1 constellation.
It marks a significant step in bringing high-speed satellite internet to even the remotest corners of India.
The Starlink’s services will remain subject to all relevant regulatory clearances, approvals, and licenses from government departments.

Starlink Gen1 is a global constellation comprising 4,408 satellites orbiting Earth at altitudes between 540 and 570 kilometers.
The constellation is engineered to deliver a robust throughput of approximately 600 Gbps over India.
This will revolutionize reliable and high-speed internet connectivity for rural and urban users.
This is a major step towards India’s ongoing efforts to liberalise its space sector and encourage private participation by accelerating the deployment of next-generation communication infrastructure.
A spokesperson for IN-SPACe emphasised that all Starlink operations in India will be closely monitored to ensure compliance with national security and regulatory requirements.
Starlink recently began providing broadband services in Sri Lanka.
