Kochi: NRI industrialist Lord Swraj Paul, 94, passed away in London on Thursday evening, media reports quoting family sources said.
Founder of UK-based Caparo Group of industries, Paul died in a hospital where he was hospitalised recently following illness.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the death of Lord Swraj Paul. Modi praised his contributions to industry and public service in the UK, and highlighted his efforts to strengthen the relationship between the UK and India.
Modi said “Deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Swaraj Paul Ji. His contributions to industry, philanthropy and public service in the UK, and his unwavering support for closer ties with India will always be remembered. I fondly recall our many interactions. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”
Paul was born in Jalandhar and relocated to the UK in the 1960s for treatment of his daughter Ambika suffering from cancer.
Paul set up the Ambika Paul Foundation as a charitable trust after the death of her daughter for the benefit of children and young people.
Paul reinforced his philanthropic activities in memory of his son Angad Paul in 2015 and his wife Aruna in 2022.
Paul was ranked 81st in the ‘Sunday Times Rich List’, this year with an estimated wealth of GBP 2 billion, largely derived from the steel and engineering multinational.
