Kochi: The Kerala Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) will cancel driving licences of drivers who violate Zebra crossings regulations, media reports said.
The MVD has given powers to enforcement officers to cancel the driving licences as per the Kerala High Court directives.
The department stressed the need for respecting pedestrians and their movement on the road.
Apart from cancelling licences, the offenders will face prosecution under Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act, carrying a penalty of ₹2,000.
Kerala reported over 800 pedestrian deaths this year.
Nearly half of the victims due to violation of zebra crossings were senior citizens.
According to the MVD, both two-wheeler and four-wheeler drivers frequently ignore pedestrians.
As per the law, motorists must slow down and stop at least three metres before a zebra crossing if a pedestrian is waiting.
