Kochi: Two brothers married the same woman in Shillai village of Himachal Pradesh to preserve the practice followed for centuries in the Hatti tribe, media reports said.
Hundreds of people witnessed the marriage solemnised under the anachronistic tradition of polyandry.
The grooms Pradeep and Kapil Negi tied the knot with bride Sunita Chauhan without any coercion.
The event was celebrated for three days amidst rendition of folk songs and dances in the Trans-Giri area of Sirmaur district.
Hailing from Kunhat village, Sunita said that she was aware of the tradition and made her decision without any compulsion.
Pradeep is a government employee while his younger brother Kapil is employed abroad. “We followed the tradition publicly as we are proud of it and it was a joint decision,” said Pradeep.
The Himachal Pradesh-Uttarakhand border was declared as Scheduled Tribe three years ago.
Polyandry cases fell considerably due to literacy.
