Kochi: A court in Wayanad sentenced five years Rigorous imprisonment to four persons in connection with attacking police official Salam during the Muthanga agitation of 2003.
The Wayanad District and Sessions court slapped a penalty of Rs 10,000 on each of them while it ordered to pay Rs 7 lakh to the family of Vinod who died in the agitation on February 19, 2003.
The court directed to pay Rs 3 lakh to Salam who was injured and Rs 2 lakh to Shashidharan, Asianet news reported.
The Muthanga agitation agitation started on February 19, 2003, when police started evicting tribals illegaÄşy occupying Muthanga wildlife sanctuary at the direction of Congress government led by A K Antony in 2003.
In 2001 the then Kerala Chief Minister A K Antony government agreed to provide land for the tribals who agitated for 45 days in front of the assembly.
