Kochi: A medical doctor born in the United States and residing there for several decades lost citizenship of the country.The 62-year-old Siavash Sobhani from Virginia lost his citizenship on the grounds that his late father was an Iranian diplomat at the time of his birth, NDTV said quotating the Washington Post.
Dr Sobhani was shocked to find through a letter from the State Department that he was granted US citizenship by mistake when he was an infant when he applied for the renewal of his passport in February this year. The letter explained that those born in the US to parents with diplomatic immunity do not automatically acquire US citizenship.
Dr Sobhani said that he paid taxes, voted during Presidential polls and served the country during the pandemic.Dr Sobhani has applied for permanent residency and spent over $40,000 on legal expenses and his looking forward to hear good news from the authorities. He has no idea when his case would be resolved.
