ED scans CPM accounts

Kochi: The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) has intensified its probe into money received in bank accounts operated by the CPM in the Karuvannur Cooperative Bank scam in Thrissur in Kerala, media reports quoting ED said.

The amount that was received by CPM accounts in Karuvannur Cooperative Bank were not substantiated by the CPM district secretary M M Varghese who was empowered to operate the accounts, the ED said.

Ninety percent of money from these accounts were withdrawn as soon as ED started investigation into the scam.When asked about the details of transactions carried out through these banks, Varghese expressed ignorance and asked the ED to get it clarified from the party state secretary, the reports said.

The ED had questioned Varghese twice, but had failed to get much information from him. The ED is planning to go strong against Varghese if he fails to give more information about the bank account transactions.The agency said it is planning to intensify investigation into 20 other banks where irregularities have been reported.

The Karuvannur Service Cooperative Bank was founded in 1921 and is ruled by the CPM. The state police registered a case into irregularities after an official incharge reported about bank fraud in 2021.The ED took over the investigation and has submitted an interim charge-sheet against 55 accused PMLA court in Kaloor. It has attached property worth Rs 87.75 crore.
