Kochi: Congress chief in Kerala K Sudhakaran is leaving for the US to undergo treatment, kicking off speculations about his future in the party, media reports said.
Sudhakaran has praised the BJP for last few years, even as he had denied any plans to quit Congress, the reports said.
Sudhakaran’s soft corner towards the BJP has triggered rumours of the firebrand leader from CPM stronghold Kannur migrating to the BJP which has rolled out red carpet for popular leaders from other parties to join it.
Sudhakaran’s open criticism of Congress state leaders had exposed disunity in the party.
The spat between him and Opposition Leader V D Satheeshan after the party’s victory in the Puthuppally election was a treat for the rivals of Congress dreaming to see the party perish.
Sudhakaran’s lack of interest in party activities due to his illness had invited the wrath of Congress central leader Rahul Gandhi who had directed him to change his attitude.
No one in the party has been assigned to act president during his absence. In case there is a move to assign someone in his place, it will lead to clashes between countless groups in the party’s state unit.
The IUML was trying to make use of Sudhakaran case as an excuse to ally with the CPM-led LDF.
IUML said that Sudhakaran’s demeanor had caused damage to the Congress led UDF.
The BJP state president K Surendran has stated a few months back that Sudhakaran was longing to join the BJP.
Surendran said that Sudhakaran’s
statements reflect the general sense of insecurity among Congress leaders due to the steady decline of Congress across the country.
Surendran had said that the majority of Congress leaders in the state had a similar mindset as that of Sudhakaran.
