3 years jail for Ponmudy, wife

Kochi: Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister K Ponmudy and his wife P Visalakshi were sentenced to three years of Simple
Imprisonment and were fined Rs 50 lakh each in a disproportionate assets case, media reports said.
If they fail to pay the amount, they would have to undergo additional six months of imprisonment.
The court granted 30 days of time for them to appeal against the verdict.
Earlier, The High Court had found Ponmudy and his wife guilty of the charges after quashing the ruling of a Court in Villupuram which had acquitted them in 2016.
Ponmudi and wife were accused of amassing assets worth Rs 1.72 crore disproportionate to their known sources of income during his tenure as Tamil Nadu Minister for Higher Education and Mines between April 13, 2006, and May 13, 2010, the reports said.
