Kochi: The Latin Catholic Church managed St Rita’s Public School in Palluruthy reopened on Wednesday break following a controversy over a Muslim child insisting to wear a head scarf against the school rules, media reports said.
The matter got murkier as the student called her father Aziz who rushed with his supporters who crowded in the school and created a scene and shouted against the school management, the school management told the media.
The matter escalated into a heated confrontation between the girl’s parents
and the school management, the parent-teacher association (PTA) followed by the school declaring holidays for two days from October 13.
The school moved the Kerala High Court seeking police protection which was provided.
It all started on October 7 when a class 8 student came wearing a hijab to the school
refused permission for her to attend classes violating school dress code.
The student’s father, Aziz, argued that his daughter had not violated the rules in any disruptive way.
Meanwhile, State Education Minister V Sivankutty reiterated the government’s stance on school uniform policies which cannot be breached.
