Kochi: Women athletes from North East make India proud as another lass has guaranteed a medal for the country in the Tokyo Olympics. Boxer Lovlina Borgohain of Assam defeated Chen Nien-chin of Chinese Taipei in the second quarterfinal bout of the women’s welterweight (64-69 kg) category. The first medal, as silver, was won by Mirabai Chanu of Manipur in the 49kg category weightlifting. Lovlina defeated her rival Chen 4-1 to move into the semifinals.There is no third-place decider in boxing and both the losers in the semifinals are presented bronze medals. There were decider matches until 1948 to spot bronze medalist. The rules were changed in 1952. Lovlina said she had been waiting for the opportunity to avenge the defeat suffered by the same boxer four times on earlier occasions.
