Kochi: Three decades after losing the ODI World Cup to Pakistan, England avenged the defeat them by 5 wickets in the T20 World Cup finals at Melbourne in Australia today. It was in 1992, Pakistan under the captaincy of Imran Khan beat England to win the World Cup.
England have become the first country to win both formats played with white ball. Winning the toss, England chose to field first. Pakistan was not comfortable against the England bowlers and they could make only 137 losing 8 wickets. The main problem for Pakistan happened in the final overs when they failed to amass more runs and could make only 137 for 8.
Masood was the top scorer with 38. Azam made 32 and S Khan 20. For the winners, S Curran took 3 wickets, Rashid, Jordan 2 wickets each and Stokes 1.
England also encountered problems facing Pakistan bowlers. Stokes made an invaluable 52, captain Jos Buttler 26 and Brooks 20. For Pakistan, Rauf took 2 wickets, Afridi, S Khan, and Wasim 1 each. England reached the target even as 6 ball were remaining to be bowled.
