Kochi: CPM leader and former district panchayat president P P Divya arrested after her anticipatory bail plea was rejected by a court in connection with the suicide of a government official Naveen Babu who was accused by Divya of being corrupt.
The police took her into custody while she was on the way to surrender to the police.
The Thalassery Principal Sessions Court had denied her anticipatory bail on Tuesday morning.
The Special Investigation Team is questioning Divya.
Divya was shunted removed as district panchayat president after the suicide of Naveen Babu.
Investigation has not found any evidence to prove that Naveen Babu was corrupt.
Divya’s arrest has become a blot on the already tainted CPM led government at a time when the state is witnessing two assembly byelections and a Lok Sabha seat.
Navin was found dead at his residence the day after his farewell ceremony during which Divya had accused him of corruption. Divya had attended the function without being invited.
Divya claimed that she was invited to the event by the Kannur District Collector, Arun K Vijayan who rejected her claims. Naveen Babu was just seven months away from retirement when he ended his life.
Divya had filed an anticipatory bail plea before the Thalassery Sessions Court after the police booked her in the case.
