Kochi: Eviction of encroachments in Idukki is picking up speed in Idukki coinciding with the veteran communist leader V S Achuthanandan completing 100 years tomorrow, media reports said.
It was about 16 years back Achuthanandan as the Chief Minister embarked on a mission to evict encroachments across the state, but was suspended due to objection by his party and allies, the reports said.
The Idukki district administration has restarted the eviction drive acting on an order of the Kerala High Court.
The eviction team has booted out Tiju Kuriakose from the 5.55 acres of cardamom plantation owned by the government.
Buildings constructed illegally in the land have been sealed by the district collector led team which is assigned to evict encroachments from 349 acres of revenue land where multistorey resorts, offices of political parties and cardamom estates are functioning illegally. Most vulnerable areas are Chinnakanal, Aanayirangal.
A college started by former DGP Tomin Thachankary’s brother is among those illegally functioning entities in encroached land.
The list of encroachers submitted in the High Court by the government includes his name for encroaching 7.7 acres.
One Jolly Paul has encroached 50 acres in Pallivasal.
The court ordered eviction drive while hearing a petition filed by One Earth, One Life seeking action against encroachments and illegal constructions in Munnar and other areas in Idukki.
The government submitted that as many as 330 encroachments had been identified.
