Film director Shafi passes away

Kochi: Malayalam film director Shafi, 56, passed away due to brain haemorrhage last night here, media reports said.
He was hospitalised on January 16 due to severe headaches and insomnia. It was found that he was suffering from brain hemorrhage for which he underwent surgery. His condition deteriorated following which he was put on a ventilator support.
Shafi is survived by wife Shamila and two daughters. Director and screenplay writer Rafi is his brother.
Shafi’s body will be kept at the Cochin Service Cooperative Bank Auditorium in Manapatti Parambu from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm on Sunday for public homage. Shafi will be cremated at the Karukappilly Juma Masjid cemetery. Shafi forayed into the film industry backed by his brother Rafi and a relative director Siddique.
He started as assistant director with noted filmmakers like Rajasenan and the Rafi-Mecartin duo.
Shafi made his debut as an independent director with 2001 film One Man Show. Most of his films includeming Kalyanaraman, Pulival Kalyanam, Thommanum Makkalum, Mayavi, Chattambinadu, Chocolate, Marykkundoro Kunjaadu, Makeup Man, Two Countries, and Sherlock Toms were big hits.
Shafi also directed Majaa, a Tamil remake of Thommanum Makkalum. His last film was Aanandam Paramanandam, released in 2022.
