Kochi: The draft amendment bill seeking to amend the Wakf Act of 1995 to include non-muslims and women is expected to be tabled in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, media reports quoting government sources said.
The bill mulls to amend 44 sections of the act.
Another bill to abolish a 1923 Waqf Act is also to be introduced. Members of the house were given copies on Tuesday.
The amendment will also rename the 1995 law as the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development Act.
The government’s aim is to bring professionalism in the management of Waqf properties, which refer to land set aside, under Islamic law, for religious or charitable purposes, the reports said.
The bill proposes to include a Union Minister, three MPs, three representatives of Muslim organisations, and three Muslim law experts in the council.
It will also have two retired judges of the Supreme Court or a High Court, four ‘people of national repute’ and senior union government officials, the reports said.
