Kochi: In a swift operation, police nabbed a top customs official for helping smugglers to smuggle gold through Karipur airport in Kozhikode, media reports said.
Muniappa was held after the police chief of Malappuram got a tip-off about the smuggling.
Gold weighing 320 grams was seized from the possession of Muniappa who had recently resumed duty as Customs Superintendent.
A raid in his house led to the seizure of Rs 4,42,980, foreign currency and other valuable articles.
A few passports were also seized from him. He used to seize passports and return them to the owners on payment of bribes.
