“Illegal immigrants” return home

Kochi: A military aircraft with Indians, accused of entering the US illegally, will arrive in Punjab today, BBC reported.
The aircraft left Texas late on Tuesday for Amritsar where authorities have made measures to process them.
The move is part of President Donald Trump’s poll promise of carrying out deportation of undocumented foreign nationals.
Buses have been arranged to take them to states, including Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat.
In September, 2024, over 1,000 Indians were repatriated by charter and commercial flights.
A total of 5,477 Indians have been deported between 2018 and 2023. Over 2,300 were deported in 2020.
The number of undocumented Indians in the US is disputed. Pew Research Center estimates illegal immigrants at 725,000 as of 2022, making them the third-largest group after Mexico and El Salvador.
On the other hand, the Migration Policy Institute (MPI) said there were only 375,000 illegal immigrants from India making it fifth among origin countries.
The highest numbers come from Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Mexico.
