Kochi: India went one up, beating West Indies by three runs in the first of the three ODIs at Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain in Trinidad and Tobago.
Winning the toss, West Indies decided to bowl which did not make any impact on the visitors
who made 308 for 7.
Captain Shikhar Dhawan played a sparkling innings of 97 and was unlucky to miss a ton.
S Gill contributed immensely by hitting 64 and Iyer 54.
For the West Indies, A Joseph and G Motie took two wickets each.
Chasing the target of 309, West Indies played in high spirits and it appeared the hosts would walk away with the match. But Indians were too tough for the West Indies and could make only 305 for 6.
K Mayers hit the highest 74 followed by B King 54, S Brooks 46 and R Shephard 39 not out. Captain N P made 25.
For India Mohammad Siraj, Thakur, Chahal claimed two wickets each.
The second match will be played at the same place on Sunday.
