Tokyo: Indian women’s hockey team which made wonders by making maiden entry into the semi-finals in Olympics defeating mighty Australia will take on Argentina in the semi-finals on tomorrow. The women’s team is entering the semi-finals for the first time in Olympics history. India defeated world number two by a solitary goal in the quarter finals. Scoring the goal in the 22 minute, India held on to the lead till the end with master class defense. Though Australia got eight penalty corners, they failed to convert any. Gurjit Kaur scored the winning goal which was her first one in the Olympics. India proved its mettle and gave no leeway to the rivals. Goalkeeper Savitha Punia made an outstanding show to help her team outplay the world number two team. In the Moscow Olympics in 1980, India remained in fourth place. In the last Olympics at Rio, India was relegated to the last spot of 12th rank. While Indian men were outclassed by world champions Belgium in the semi-finals held today morning. Men’s team will take on Germany in the play off for bronze while Australia will clash with Belgium in the finals.
