Kochi: Legendary Kathak dancer, composer, singer Pandit Birju Maharaj, 83, died due to a heart attack in New Delhi on Monday.
Brij Mohan Mishra, popularly known as Pandit Birju Maharaj, was trained by his father Acchan Maharaj, uncles Lachu Maharaj and Shambhu Maharaj and gave his first recital at the age of seven, media reports said.
Brij Mohan Mishra, popularly known as Pandit Birju Maharaj, started teaching Kathak at
Sangeet Bharati and Bharatiya Kala Kendra at the age of 13.
Descendant of the Maharaj family of Kathak dancers, he associated with his uncle Shambhu Maharaj for some time. He retired in 1998 after which he opened a dance school Kalashram in New Delhi.
