Kochi: Zohran Mamdani, 34, will become the first Muslim mayor of US’ biggest city New York as he has won mayoral election, BBC reported.
The victory comes ahead of President
Trump threatening to cut NYC’s federal funding if Mamdani won over Republican independent Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa
The self-described democratic socialist was relatively unknown just months ago.
He had promised to tax millionaires to pay for expanded social programmes.
In his victory speech Mamdani challenged President Trump.
Meanwhile, Democrats are projected to win governor races in Virginia and New Jersey.
Zohran Mamdani is son of Indian American filmmaker Mira Nair.
