Resist K-Rail project: Patkar

Kochi: Warning the left government against taking steps that would lead to a situation similar to the farmers’ strike, noted environmentalist Medha Patkar on Friday said that the government cannot afford to overlook people’s movement.

She said it was undemocratic on part of the government to not make public the DPR. The left parties who were part of the anti farm laws strike should honour the demands of the people’s movement against K-rail, she said inaugurating a programme ‘Medha Patkar Iragalkkoppam’ (…with victims) at Thrissur.

Speaking at a function organised by anti K-rail groups, Patkar asked what is the logic behind the left government going ahead with the K-rail project and opposing a similar bullet train project from Mumbai to Ahmedabad.

The government cannot afford to ignore genuine protests of people. It is beyond someone’s comprehension that a government which did well in handling the 2018 flood and Okhi is going to commit such a blunder, she said.

Taking a dig at the Pinarayi Vijayan government for telling the center that the K-Rail was a green project, she said it would require huge constructions to accommodate atleast  20,000 families who would be flushed out of their homes to set up the rail project, causing huge environmental problems.

She called upon the people to send back officials trying to set up survey stones.
