Kochi: Kerala government has got a green signal from the state environment impact committee for construction of Kozhikode-Wayanad tunnel road in Wayanad with riders.
The state government is required to fulfil 25 conditions for taking up the project.
The committee has directed the government to take utmost care at landslide vulnerability zones. The committee has suggested using high technical expertise in the construction of the tunnel in removing rocks. It has warned not to cause any harm to the environment,
wild animals, tribals among others.
The committee sought many clarifications before granting permission.
The Tunnel Road is a twin-tube tunnel project which is being touted as the third longest underpass in India passing through the sensitive hills and forests of the Western Ghats.
It would provide an alternate route between Kozhikode and Wayanad and will offer a number of benefits like reducing the distance between Anakkampoyil and Meppady from 42 kilometres to less than 20 kilometres, and help economic growth among others.
The project will help reduce the distance between Kochi and Bengaluru considerably by bypassing Thamarassery mountain pass in Kozhikode District as part of the National highway 766 at a height of 2,625 feet.
