Kochi: Noted Anthropologist late Dr A Ayyappan’s daughter Dr Sujatha passed away in Connecticut in the US the other day. She was working as a pediatric neurologist in the US for the last several years.
She is survived by husband Lt Col (RTD) Vidyasagar and four children.
She did her Paediatrics from Madras Medical College.
Sujatha had extended financial support to the Anthropology Department, Kannur University, to start a chair in the name of Dr Ayyappan who was the first Indian to take charge as the superintendent of Madras Government Museum from the British F H Gravely in 1940.
Dr Aiyappan took PhD in 1937 under Raymond Firth at the London School of Economics. Dr Ayyappan, who occupied prestigious positions including that of visiting professor at Cornell University and Vice-Chancellor of Kerala University, has won several awards. Kannur University Vice Chancellor M S Mahendra Kumar has condoled the death of Dr Sujatha.
