Kochi: Torching of effigy (pappanji) in Fort Kochi parade ground and New Year rally have been cancelled in view of the death of former prime minister Manmohan Singh of Congress.
These are the programmes directly organised by the Cochin Carnival committee.
However, the torching of pappanji organised by Galla de Fort Kochi at Veli ground about two kms from the traditional venue will take place as planned.
Interestingly, Galla de Fort Kochi had secured conditional permission from the Kerala High Court to hold the event at Veli Ground where police had prevented holding of the event citing security reasons.
Police said as most of the cops will be at the Parade Ground, it will not be able to focus on the event at Veli Ground.
The court lifted the police ban by directing the organisers to increase the safety in Veli.
The court observed that organisers had obtained NOCs from the fire and rescue services department and electrical inspectorate.
The court directed to increase the circumference of the safety barricade to 70 feet around the effigy to increase the safety of the public.
The organisers claimed that all provisions were made for health, surveillance by police through cameras, volunteers to take care of tourists among others.
Next hearing of the case will be held on
January 13, 2025.
