Kochi: The Supreme Court on Monday
slammed the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi for his defamatory remarks about the Indian army during his Bharat Jodo Yatra on December 16, 2022, Times of India reported.
A division bench of the court said that a “true Indian won’t make such statements”.
“How do you get to know that 2,000 sq km of land was occupied by the Chinese,…” the Supreme Court observed while staying the order of the Lucknow court which issued summons to Rahul on a petition filed by a former BRO official accusing Rahul of making defamatory and demoralising remarks against the army.
The Supreme Court asked Rahul to make statements in a responsible manner in Parliament.
Rahul had moved the Supreme Court challenging the Allahabad High Court’s refusal on May 29 to stay the order of a Lucknow court issued while hearing a petition of a former Border Roads Organisation (BRO) Director, Uday Shankar Srivastava who claimed that Rahul’s remarks had defamed the Indian Army.
Rahul had made the remarks amidst clashes between armies of India and China on December 9, 2022.
Rahul had said the Chinese army was “thrashing” Indian soldiers in Arunachal Pradesh, and that the media wouldn’t question it.
