Kochi: Ten passengers from Uttar Pradesh were charred to death in a fire that broke out in a private IRCTC coach stationed in the yard of the Madurai Railway junction on Saturday, media reports said.
Explosion of an LPG cylinder is suspected to be the reason behind the fire, media reports said.
The dead included two women, the reports said.
The coach was separated from the train after the fire and parked in the yard. It is suspected that the passengers had brought a gas cylinder from outside to do cooking in the coach in the wee hours, the reports said.
Fire tenders put out the blaze by 7.15, the reports quoting railway sources said.
The passengers had arrived by Punalur-Madurai Express which reached Madurai in the wee hours.
The coach was attached at Nagercoil Junction on Friday.
The Railways have announced Rs 10 lakh relief to the next of kin of the deceased, the reports said.
