Kochi: Toll in the devastating landslides the state has ever witnessed has claimed 251 lives in Wayanad in North Kerala, media reports said.
The toll is constantly increasing as more bodies are being recovered from under the mass of earth and concrete structures that were washed away in the landslide.
Earthmovers were engaged in removing earth at different locations. Sniffer dogs are helping the rescue personnel in tracing the bodies of those who perished in the disaster.
Collapse of a temporary bridge set up yesterday was washed away due to the strong water current in Mundakai river. The army is engaged in building Bailey bridge across the river which is expected to be completed by Thursday.
A total of 1,592 have been rescued . Heavy rains continue to lash the area.
Red alert has been sounded in Wayanad, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasargod.
Bodies are being recovered from as far as 20 kms away from Chaliyar river.
Nine ministers are camping in the area to coordinate rescue operations.
More forensic doctors will be employed. Travel to Mysore redirected via Iritty and Koottupuzha.
