Kochi: The All India Trinamool Congress’ (AITC) huge victory in Kaliganj bye-election has put the BJP on a slippery track ahead of the assembly election next year in Bengal next year, media reports said.
AITC nominee Alifa Ahmed, 38, who is a techie, won the byelections from Kaliganj Assembly defeating BJP’s Ashish Ghosh by a margin of 50,049 votes.
Daughter of late AITC MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed whose death led to the bye-election, Aliya secured 1,02,759 votes against Ghosh who got 52,710 votes.
The CPI(M) supported Congress candidate Kabil Uddin Sheikh polled 28,348 votes.
Aliya, who quit her job at an IT firm in Kolkata, got more votes than what her father had got in the 2021 Assembly polls.
Kaliganj falls under Krishnanagar Lok Sabha seat which is represented by AITC’s Mahua Moitra who posted Satysev Jayate on social media.
BJP leader Amit Malviya said Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s claims that people from all communities voted for her party’s candidate in Kaliganj is incorrect.
Malviya said Hindus are 43% of the voters and the rest are Muslims, the reports said.
