Kochi: Suvendu Adhikari, 57, created history to become Chief Minister of the maiden BJP government in Bengal in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday.
Governor R N Ravi administered the oath of office to Suvendu along with Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Ashok Kirtania, Kshudiram Tudu, and Nisith Pramanik as Ministers.
Union Ministers including Home Minister Amit Shah, Chief Ministers of BJP-ruled and NDA-ruled states attended the event.
Adhikari was elected from both Nandigram and Bhabanipur where he defeated former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee by a margin of 15,115 votes.
It was Congress which was first elected with 150 seats in 1952 when CPI won 28 seats. In 1969 CPM came to power with 80 seats and remained until 2011 when All India Trinamool Congress led by Trinamool Congress captured power. BJP won 207 in 2026 while AITC with 80 seats will sit in the opposition.
